Model Features:
Prototype: In 1934 the Deutsche Reichsbahn has a large fleet of 0-10-0 BR 55's so the DRG decided to rebuild and equip them with a leading truck and reclassified them as BR 56's. The boiler was moved further forward and raised slightly. The reason was obvious: Due to the additional leading axle, the newly developed series 56 could run at much higher speeds. An improvement of 55 km / h to 70 km / h was achieved. Thus, it could be used not only as a freight train locomotive but also successfully with passenger trains. In addition, a lower axle load was achieved by the new axle assembly, which then made them suitable for secondary tracks. The former BR 55 was well equipped so with these improvements the new 56 was used in every kind of service. Altogether almost 690 machines were modified in the years 1934 - 1941 and put back into service. After the Second World War about 410 locomotives of this class were preserved, the Deutsche Bundesbahn took over 368 locomotives, they were in service until 1968 throughout Germany, in East Germany they ran until 1970. The Austrian ÖBB took over 5 locomotives of this type, they were classified as a series 656 but retired in 1956. One locomotive remained in Poland ex. 56 511, which did PKP service as Tr.5-65. She is standing there in the railway museum in Wolsztyn.
