The RENFE 9600 series cars were put into service in 1984/85 and are considered a transitional series to more modern passenger cars. They have a corrugated roof and a side corridor with compartments. The 60 BBL-9600 couchette cars were built under SNCF license, were similar in features and appearance to the 10000 series, and had ten compartments with convertible couchette/seat berths.
In addition, the series included 15 DDE-10400 type cars with a mail compartment and a service compartment for the train manager. These had a continuous side corridor and were also based on the 10000 series in appearance and color.
