Prototype: The new construction program of the DB provided a tender locomotive for passenger transport in suburban service. For this purpose, a driving wheel diameter of 1,500 mm and a maximum speed of 85 km / h was specified. In addition, set the wheelset 1'D2 'in order to accommodate enough supplies can. It should replace the series 93 (Prussia T 14 and T 14.1) and 78 (Prussia T 18). Preliminary studies for this new Series 65 had been made a good ten years before DRG times, therefore, the formal similarity with the later built DR series 65.10 resulted. Krauss-Maffei AG in Munich delivered the first attractive prototypes 65 001 and 002 in March 1951, and another eleven machines were put into service later this year (65 003-013). After basic probation an additional order of five copies was made, Delivered in the years 1955 and 1956. The locomotives had received according to the new sub-bases of the DB fully welded high-performance boiler with combustion chambers and a welded sheet metal frame. The first 13 units were equipped with Knorr surface preheaters, the others received Henschel mixing preheaters and small changes in the body and cabs. The 65 012-018 were provided with a control device for the Wendezugbetrieb. The DB distributed the first 13 locomotives on the operating plants Darmstadt (65 001-007), Dusseldorf-Abstellbahnhof (65 008-010) and Letmathe (65 011-013), the replica series arrived completely to Essen. There supplemented from 1954 nor the 65 011-013 the stock and were able to prove themselves with their sisters primarily in the turnaround. Due to their tremendous acceleration acceleration, they were used extremely kilometer-intensive: The 14,821 km, which completed the 65,014 in January 1958 on 29 operating days, seems almost unbelievable, with an average of 511 km per working day! Another stronghold was the Bw Darmstadt, where eleven locomotives were stationed between 1954 and 1966. However, with progressive structural change, the 65 007 was the first to be retired in 1966. The last seven machines found a new home in 1970 at Auslauf-Bw Aschaffenburg, where they made themselves especially useful on the route to Miltenberg. Until April 1972, all machines had to be shut down with the exception of the 65,018 with damages or expired deadlines.
