Prototype: In 1959 the Rhein-Sieg Eisenbahn (RSE) bought three diesel shunters (V11-V13) from the Orenstein & Koppel company. In those days, this private German railway handled plenty of goods traffic, but not long after the level dropped to such an extent that the three locomotives were no longer needed. In 1969 all three were sold to the Zillertalbahn (ZB) in Austria. The Manufacturer re-gauged them from the original 785mm for use on 760mm track. V12 and V13 were then renumbered D10 and D11 and used by the ZB for marshalling trains. The third shunter, V11, had suffered an engine failure and served only as a source of spare parts for the others.

When the new owner purchased main-line diesel BR 740 from Yugoslavia in 1980, D10 was renumbered D12, probably to keep the “new” D10 in sequence with D8 and D9, the other two large main-line diesels.

Today the D12 shunter has been fitted with radio-operated remote control and therefore for safety reasons now carries an orange-colored rotating beacon on its roof.

The RSE's former V11 was sold by the ZB to the Steiermarkische Landesbahn (STLB) in 1974 and restored to working order: it now bears the number VL6 and operates in Murau on the STLB's Mur Valley line.
