Prototype: After the second World War the Deutche Reichsbahn built a new tender locomotive for commuter services. It was designed in cooperation with the Central Technical Bureau of the Institute for the Construction of Railway Vehicles in Berlin-Adlershof. The engine was manufactured at Lokomotivbau Karl-Marx in Babelsberg. By 1957 the DR bought 88 class 65 engines. The locomotive operated with passenger trains, mainly double deck coaches. In 1967 all engines were equipped with the Giesl flat smokestack, also called “squashed stack”. The 65 1049 is still in operation.
