Prototype: As early as 1955 began the success story of the Ae 6/6, whose 120 copies were delivered to the SBB. Quickly they proved to be the ideal draft horses, especially on the Gotthard, to transport the ever-increasing train loads over the long ramps at high speed, because the slow "crocodiles" cost too much time on the heavily used sections of track. The shapely Ae 6/6 powerhouses quickly replaced the "crocodiles" and other older locomotives on all steep main routes. The Ae 6/6 has gained cult status in recent years of service. After leaving the active service at the SBB several locomotives museum have been preserved for posterity.
