In the 1950s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn developed a diesel locomotive type program to renew the vehicle fleet. The main goal was the replacement of the steam traction on the still quite extensive secondary route network. The single-engine V 100 series with 1100-hp engines was developed for mixed secondary railway service. Parallel to these V 100.10, a total of 380 machines with a 1350-horsepower engine were supplied as V 100.20 from 1962 to 1965.
With the introduction of the computer number, the series designation of the stronger machines was changed to 212. The series 212 has hiked through some color variants over time, from 1987 Orientrot became the standard color.
