At the DR, numerous machines that remained in the country after the end of the war were switched to oil firing. Until the replacement by modern diesel and electric locomotives, the locomotives of the class 44 formed the backbone of the heavy freight train service. Because of their enormous pulling power, the machines were also called “jumbo”. The last “tailcoats” were retired at the DR in 1986.
