Prototype: With nearly 5000 units built, the Class 55 was the largest single class of steam locomotive in Germany. The 55s were built from 1913 to 1921 as the G8 for the Royal Prussian Railways (KPEV). Due to their heavy axle load, the 55s were used on mainlines as freight locomotives and switchers. From 1934 to 1941, six hundred and ninety one 55s were rebuilt with a leading axle and were designated as Class 56. The last 55s were retired by the DB at the end of 1972 .
