Product Features and Details
Between 1959 and 1977, the Deutsche Bundesbahn acquired over 4,800 “n-type” coaches—later nicknamed Silberlinge thanks to their unpainted, brushed stainless-steel exterior. Lighter than earlier designs and capable of up to 140 km/h with suitable equipment, these coaches appeared in several layouts, including mixed-class cars and control cars. Variants included the 1969 Bnrzb 724 series, which could be quickly converted into hospital cars, and later control cars with the “Karlsruhe head” (from 1972) and the “Wittenberg head” (from 1993). From the 1980s onward, DB modernized many sets, first as the orange-and-grey City-Bahn trains and later in various redesign schemes such as mint turquoise and light grey. Remarkably, even 60 years after their introduction, Silberlinge were still in daily service in 2019.
