Around 1952, the Minden branch of the German Federal Railway (DB) developed a standardized program for 26.4-meter long-distance passenger coaches (Group 53). Under the direction of Dr.-Ing. Adolf Mielich, a modular system of coaches was created. He revived his designs from the Reichsbahn era, incorporating many modern elements such as closed rubber bellows gangways and 1000 or 1200 mm wide sliding windows. It differed from pre-war coach types in its even number of compartments and symmetrical coach halves, which allowed for the combination of the same or different classes, as well as dining and luggage compartments. After nine prototype coaches in 1952, series production began in 1955. The B4ümg-54 passenger coaches (1225 units) offered second-class passengers, for the first time, only three seats per bench instead of the previous four. This improvement in comfort for the "people's passenger car" was very well received by passengers. The first-class A4ümg-54 carriage type (199 units) exemplified the increased travel comfort of that era. Painted in an elegant, dark blue livery, the carriages left the factories and were primarily used in the DB's F-train sets. Car Group 53 was completed by the mixed-class AB4ümg-55 (357 units) and, from the late 1950s onward, by the BPw4üm-58/59 half-baggage cars (138 units). Thanks to their groundbreaking innovations, these carriages, and the later conversions derived from them, were indispensable to DB passenger trains for decades to come. It is therefore not surprising that some of the last carriages were not retired until the early 1990s, or that they then began a second life in museum trains.
