    INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROLE MODEL

Before the BR 01 series gained its reputation as “the” German express locomotive, the companies Borsig (01 001-008) and AEG (01 009-010) delivered a total of ten pre-series locomotives to the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG). It started with 01 008, which is still preserved today and was handed over to the DRG on January 10, 1926. However, the locomotives were still ahead of their time back then, because many routes and depots were not yet prepared for an axle load of 20 tons. The operational routes were therefore still very limited in the first few years of operation. This caused the testing of the new locomotives to take longer. The most noticeable difference to the later series locomotives was that the first ten 01s had a visibly longer driver's cab. There were also differences in the structural design of the frame and many other details.
