Prototype Inspiration
In the mid-1920s, the BLS required a locomotive capable of hauling 500-ton trains at 50 km/h over steep gradients of up to 27‰ between the Ruhr region and northern Italy. Built by Sécheron of Geneva and Breda of Milan, the Ae 6/8 was a true powerhouse with a (1Co)(Co1) wheel arrangement, 140-ton weight, and 4,500 HP output. These locomotives served reliably into the 1980s, becoming icons of Swiss heavy freight railroading.
