If you have little space than we recommend starting with N-gauge or Z-gauge. These small trains offer a large verity of items to choose from and you can build a massive layout in very little space. HO gauge is the most popular; the manufactures really produce and cater to the HO line. HO gauge is the perfect size to appreciate the detail and running performance. Also many customers prefer running their trains digitally and HO makes the best sense for Digital operation.
