Product Features and Details
Prototype: At the beginning of the 1960's the DR urgently reguired new electric locomotives. Since 1957 the Lokomotivbau Elektrotechnische Werke Hennigsdorf had been working on the development of a modern BoBo locomotive. It was planned to build an express version with the classification E11 w/ a top sopeed of 120 km/h as well as a passenger and freight train locomotive with the classification E42 and a top speed of 100 km/h. The prototype engines E11-01 and 02 were ready for tests in the 1960's. Serial deliveries began w/ the E11-003 at the end of 1962. The E42-001 followed in 1963. The elegant front valances beneath the buffers were a striking feature of the first locomotives. In accordance with the reguirements of the DR, the electrical designs of the E11 & E42 were identical. The only differences were in the mechanical parts such as the axle gear transmissions to take account of the different fields of operation. Thus the E11 reached a top speed of 120 km/h hauling express trains weighing 600 tons, while the E42 attained 80 km/h w/ heavy goods trains weighing 1800 tons. After initial construction problems the powerful locomotives proved themselves w/ their balanced running properties and demonstrated their all-around qualities in front of almost types of trains. All of locomotives have been taken out of service.
