Compartment coaches differ from “normal” passenger coaches in that each compartment has its own door on both sides of the coach. The first compartment coach in the 19th century consisted of several cabins set on a single chassis, similar to the past coach. Compartment coaches with doors for each compartment, without connection between the compartments were built up until the early 20th century. The disadvantages of this type of design were that travellers could not visit the toilet or dining car during the journey and the train crew had to climb along the running board of the coach to check tickets. Countless two, three and four-axle compartment coaches were widespread especially in Germany, and in particular in this country with the Prussian State Railway.
