The Bavarian GtL 4/4 first entered service in 1911. It continued to be built with a few changes until 1927. The locomotives performed very well in operation and, with an output of 450 hp, were the most powerful Bavarian local railway locomotives. A total of 117 locomotives were manufactured. Almost all railway depots in Bavaria that served branch lines had GtL 4/4 in their inventory.
