In the early nineteen fifties, the Deutsche Bundesbahn had almost 40,000 Verbandsbauart covered freight cars - freight cars in a design standardised by the Deutsche Staats-bahnwagen-Verband (German Railway Wagon Association) - in its fleet. The covered freight car that was used most often by the DB at this time received the new designation G 10 in 1951. Although the cars were reinforced to cope with the additional loads caused by the installation of air brakes and higher speed trains, some of the cars in the original versions remained in service right up to the end. They had a pneumatic line instead of air brakes, which is why they were called "line cars".
