Green had been the prevailing colour in the passenger train service on German rail tracks up to the end of the 60ies. In addition to the passenger coaches, baggage cars, and mail vans, the electric locomotives as well carried a green paint. The 242 124-6 was the first electric locomotive at all to receive such a new paint in the Weißenfels depot after a general inspection. In the mid-70ies it was demanded to refresh the DR’s passenger coaches as well in terms of colouring. Four coaches of the Bghwe class and four newly constructed Y type coaches were selected for the tests. The Bghwe coaches were applied a paint coating in different new colour combinations in the Raw (Reichsbahn repair shed) Potsdam in 1978. All coaches belonged to the Bahnbetriebswagenwerk Zwickau and were used for traffic service from there to Leipzig, Dresden, Johanngeorgenstadt and Karlovy Vary.
