The robust "truck" for catastrophe protection
The VW 181 was particularly well suited for the protection of the disaster in the 1970s in the provision of the nebulous units, which were formed in an emergency. On the other hand, the vehicles were stationed on a decentralized basis, but were later integrated into the fire brigades despite their orange color. When the VW 181 was presented at the IAA 1969, its automobile vocation was initially purely military in nature. After the European countries actually wanted to build a Jeep-Pendant in the 1960s, but then failed and then the DKW-Munga also ran out, the Bundeswehr came under pressure. VW ate and put the Type 181 on a platform frame, the VW Beetle contributed the boxer engine. Initially presented as a "courier car", the 181er was quickly renamed to the "Kübelwagen" in the soldier's paraphrase - in reference to the military vehicle a designation not officially desired by the Bundeswehr. From 1969 to 1980 140,768 vehicles rolled off the line. Initially in Wolfsburg, then in Hanover and Emden, lastly only at the location Mexico the VW 181 went as a purpose vehicle in various deployments.
