The prototype made 788 kW (1070 hp), weighed 85 t, drove forwards and backwards 60 km / h. About 1250 locomotives of this series transported freight and passenger trains on steep sections. Furthermore, the locomotive was extremely intense in the heavy shunting and shunting service - especially at Hidden Mountains - used. At the beginning of the 1970s, the last copies of both German railway administrations left operating service. The last specimens of the DR (East) were, among others, located in the railway depot Suhl. Especially by the use on the mountain ranges in the Thuringian forest they became known.
Several locomotives of this series have been preserved, some of them are operational.
