A real highlight for collectors That plastic ready-made model is the reproduction of the landmark of the Zollverein coal mine located in Essen at a scale of 1:566. The World Heritage Site Zollverein – also known as the »the most beautiful coal mine in the world« – is one of the most impressive industrial monuments and the centre of economic creativity in the Ruhr District today. This is an ideal decorative model and an ideal gift for lovers of industrial culture.
History: One of the first industrialists, Franz Haniel, had Shaft 1 of the Zollverein coal mine sunk in Essen-Katernberg in 1847. The name »Zollverein« – German Customs Union – reminds of the first customs union of the German states in 1834, which was the precursor of a united Germany. With the putting into operation of Central Shaft 12 in 1932 that coal mine was to become the largest and most advanced deep mining site in the world with a staff of up to 6,000 workers and a daily output of 12,000 metric tons of coal. The coal mine was shut down in 1986 and declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
