Prototype: DR In 1976, the DR had the opportunity to take over 103 new coaches from the wagon building industry because the National Czechoslovakian Railways (CSD) were unable to take delivery thereof due to financing problems. The DR planned to use these coaches in totally new one-day-connection traffic between the district capitals and Berlin without any intermediate stop. To this end, the coaches were given an attractive ivory-orange paint coating. The new train family was named "City-Express". With the envisaged high-quality offer, all trains were supposed to have a restaurant car as well which had previously been rather an exception in domestic express trains. Because the coaches taken over were only 1st and 2nd class types, however, a suitable restaurant car had to be found. It was decided to repaint the new 18.7m restaurant cars just delivered from Halberstadt accordingly, although the envisaged uniform train appearance could not be achieved entirely due to their deviating form.
