In April 2011, signed a framework agreement between Deutsche Bahn AG and Bombardier Transportation, which provides for the delivery of up to 200 pieces new TRAXX P160 DE ME. The locomotives, a renewal of the series 245 are meant as a substitute for the now getting on in years, large diesel locomotives of Class 218. The diesel-electric locomotives have four diesel engines (ME - Multi engine) that drive four generators to produce electricity, which in turn feed the traction motors on the converter. The diesel engines automatically turn on or off - depending on the required performance of the locomotive. This serves to reduce the idling time of the engine, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. Thus, this engine fits nicely in the new ecological and sustainable environmental concept of DB AG. Due to the derivation of the TRAXX family about 70% of all components used are compatible with the existing TRAXX locomotives. Assembled and designed the 245 series in the former Henschel & Sohn factory in Kassel, now owned by Bombardier. Large components such as the locomotive body and the bogies are supplied from the works of, among other Wroclaw and victories. The first lot of 20 locomotives for DB Regio was accessed directly with the signing of the contract. At InnoTrans 2012 the new locomotive class was officially presented with 245003-9. The first 245 have already been taken by DB Regio in operation.
