Day 2, Saturday, September 4th
One hour before landing they will serve breakfast. After checking through immigration and customs we will board our train to Cochem. After checking into the hotel the afternoon is free for your own activities. We will meet for dinner at 7:30 and probably will call it a night after that.
Day 3, Sunday, September 5th
After Breakfast our bus will bring us to Rüdesheim. With its castles, the Niederwald monument and the “Drosselgasse” this little town is known through out the world. You have time for a stroll or a visit of the mechanical Musikkabinett.
In the afternoon we board our ship going to St. Goar. We are passing numerous castles and castle ruins bordering the Rhine valley. Very famous of course is also the Loreley with all its fairy tales.
After 2 hours we reach St. Goar, where you have the opportunity for shopping or coffee with some wonderful German pastries. Then we will board our bus and return back to the hotel.
Day 4, Monday, September 6th
Today we are on our way to Trier. We will ride along the Moselle, passing hundreds of vineyards, castles, monasteries and ruins. The Moselle district is one of the most picturesque areas in Germany. I am sure you will fall in love with it. Arriving in Trier we will meet our tour guide, which will show us sights like the Basilika and many other churches, Porta Negra, different baths like the Imperial Bath, the Forum Bath and the Barbara Bath. This is a breathtaking city with over 2000 years of history. After dinner we return back to our hotel.
Day 5, Tuesday, September 7th
It is time to say good-bye to the Moselle area and heading to Württemberg. Freiburg im Breisgau is our new destination. Nestled on the foot of the Black Forest it is one of the quaintest cities in Germany. Our ride will take over 4 hours, so after we are settled in our new hotel, we give you the rest of the day off, so you can explore the area.
Day 6, Wednesday, September 8th
Our bus will bring us to the Hohenzollern Castle, one of the most spectacular fortresses in Germany.
Hohenzollern Castle is the ancestral seat of the Prussian Kings and German Emperors as well as the Swabian branch of the Princes of Hohenzollern. It ranks among Europe’s most famous and popular castles. The stunning panorama of the picturesque landscape has already been admired by Emperor William II. (1859-1941) who visited the castle several times and is said to have uttered “the view from up here is truly worth a voyage”.
After the castle we are heading towards Göppingen the home of Marklin. We are invited to tour the factory and the museum. In the evening we return to our hotel in Freiburg.
Day 7, Thursday, September 9th
Freiburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Therefore we will do a little city tour before we go to see the layout.
Oh my god! You have never seen a layout like this. The landscape and the details are unbelievable. The layout depicts an area from the Blackforest in the 1930s. There are over 900 handcrafted trees, 78 specially made buildings and hand-laid track to admire. Even the layout is privately owned we are invited to see it. All those buildings are made be MBZ just for this layout. The nice thing is that you can buy them now for yours. It also will help you to get a real prospective for HO scale. When you look at the village church it will strike you how big it is, but when you would measure it you would see that it is to scale.
Day 8, Friday, September 10th
Today, we will try to compare the layout from yesterday with reality. This line is one of the steepest in Germany. The line rises from an altitude of 912 feet (Freiburg) to over 2900 feet in Hinterzarten in only 15 miles. Some of the high points on this route are the Ravenna bridge, crossing the Ravenna gorge, the rock formation Hirschsprungfelsen. Next stations will be Titisee and Neustadt, where there are quite some building you will remember from the layout.
