Another sensation was shown at the 1979 Transportation Exhibition in Munich in addition to the Transrapid magnetic levitation train: the first electronically controlled three-phase current locomotive for universal use. The builders, Krauss-Maffei, Henschel, Krupp, and BBC, were not so particular as the official DB about the designation for the locomotive. At its presentation the E 120 bore the identifying letter for electric locomotives in Era III in addition to the regular class designation. The first 5 prototypes showed pioneering technology that was used and developed further in the regular production version 120.1, in the ICE project, and in the present day Europa locomotives.
