The Österreichische Südbahn Gesellschaft commissioned this shapely locomotive starting in 1910 for the express trains that were getting heavier and heavier on the main line Vienna- Triest. From 1910 - 1914 a total of 44 locomotives were delivered for the Austrian net of the Südbahn by the locomotive factory of the StEG (Österreichisch-Ungarische Staatseisenbahngesellschaft) in Vienna, the locomotive factory Wiener Neustadt and the Viennese locomotive factory Floridsdorf. After the Austrian part of the Südbahn was nationalized in 1923 the 17 locomotives were acquired by the Österreichischen Bundesbahnen (formerly BBÖ) and registered as series 209 because the number 109 was already taken. The Deutsche Reichsbahn took over all 17 locomotives of the BBÖ in 1938 as series 38.41. The decommissioning of the last Italian locomotives from the series 653 took place in 1940 after the railway line from Triest to Udine and Venice had been electrified. The ÖBB transferred another 11 locomotives into the new numbering system as series 38. Some of the locomotives were still equipped with flue-tube throttling and a Giesel ejector which resulted in less coal consumption and more power output. In 1992 the serial number 38.4101 was restored by the Technical Museum Vienna as series 109.13 and it being kept in operating condition by the 1. Österreichischer Straßenbahn- und Eisenbahn-Klub (ÖSEK) in Strasshof. On the occasion of the railway anniversary (175 years of railways in Austria) Roco is manufacturing this model in H0 in several variations, with design considerations regarding the technique, simultaneously.
