The first models of the locomotives operated as class 116 by DB were commissioned as class ES1 in 1926. As the design proved to be successful, further locomotives were built until 1933. They remained in service in the DB fleet until 1979, usually pulling fast trains and express trains within Bavaria and into Austria.
