In 1964 ÖBB ordered the series VT 98 rail buses, which had proved their worth in Germany, for light passenger train services. The rail buses put into service later were copied under license by the Jenbacher Werke and SGP Wien.
The two-section Roco model is a new edition of the ÖBB powered rail-car built in Uerdingen with roadnumber 5081.02 and 6581.02.
