The built until about 1930 electric locomotives had either direct or rail or blind shaft drive with a large engine. The looming global economic crisis forced both to thrift in the materials and on the other hand, long term, the final speed of the locomotives should be increased. This could not be realized with the old drive systems. After successful testing of the Probelok E 44 101 axle bogies and one motor per axle further pre-production locomotives were built from 1933 in two different versions 44102-105 E and E44 106-109. All pre-production locomotives were without stem, only the series locomotives were typical of the E44 stem. After the production locomotive E 44 more than 100 units were built, pre-production locomotives had to be renamed from 1938 E44 501-509. The locomotives were mainly located in the depot Freilassing and came from there to Salzburg, Berchtesgaden and Innsbruck. The E 44 503 and 504 were stationed from 1946 to 1950 in Garmisch. The Lokokomotiven have done their service until the late 70s, early 80s. The E 44 502 stands as a monument locomotive in the station area of ??Freilassing.
