Prototype: With the introduction of the EW IV coaches, the EW I and II coaches partly migrated to the regional traffic. Apart from this, they continue to run in inter-regional trains and express trains, in the latter mainly as supplementary coaches during peak traffic times. The interior of the most coaches was completely modernised during a necessary asbestos repair. Instead of the simulated woodwork, the walls received plastic claddings carrying a tile imitation. The end walls inside are single-coloured red or blue, the seats have now grey upholstery with grey, blue or red headrests. Today, the vehicles have battery chargers instead of axle-driven generators. From 1984 onwards, 144 coaches were modified for the new shuttle-service trains (Neue Pendelzüge - NPZ) and conductorless operation. To this end, they were equipped with new doors flush with the car body that could be closed via remote control. The matching exterior yellowblue-white colouring was named “colibri”. Apart from that, many of the coaches used in the conventional services were modernised – though its doors and their operation remained unchanged. These coaches received a green-blue colour design that was named “parrot paint” in analogy to the NPZ coaches. Shuttle-service trains made up of identical EW II coaches can presently still be observed, among others, between Basle and Lucerne every day.
