The V 180 diesel locomotives were the last big diesel locomotives to
be developed in the GDR. Since the 4-axle locomotives were too heavy for many DR routes, a 6-axle version with lower axle weight was developed. Between 1966 and 1970, the Deutsche Reichsbahn procured a total of 206 6-axle locomotives and used them throughout the DR network.
