After the "Reichseisenbahnen" were created, the "Committee for the standardisation of construction types of passenger coaches and freight cars" appointed by the Reichsverkehrsministerium drew up design drafts for the "Unit construction types 1921" of the main and secondary line coaches. The "forebear" of these drafts is the coach of Class Di 21 (BRAWA order nos. 45750 to 45753), which was still produced with a wooden body. Whereas its length and wheelbase were retained for the mainline coaches, vehicles with a lower weight and a shorter wheelbase had to be used on secondary lines for reasons of traffic volume, radii and gradients. All designs of the "secondary coaches 1921" therefore have a wheelbase of 6200 mm. Due to limited funds and the many existing old vehicles, only a few vehicles were ordered. Linke-Hoffmann delivered a total of 5 coaches of Class BCi-24 to the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft in 1926. Although the coaches had been ordered for the passenger fleet, they were converted immediately after delivery to trailer cars for the electric "Rübezahl" locomotive and used on the Silesian mountain routes. However, in 1942 three of the coaches were returned to the passenger coach fleet and were thus used for their original purpose after all.
