After the 18.7 m long new car from Halberstadt had proven itself in daily use, a combined passenger coach/luggage car was developed on this basis. A total of 202 of the cars assigned to the stock as Class "DBghwse" were built between 1969 and 1974. Such a rational use of vehicles was possible especially on many less busy routes, where the addition of a separate luggage car was not worthwhile. The first two cars were allocated to the depot at Leipzig main station from September 1969 onwards on a trial basis, where they proved their worth right from the beginning.
