Since the 1990s, fuel rods from German nuclear power stations which can no longer be processed have been transported by rail from Le Havre in France to the nuclear intermediate storage facility in Gorleben. In order to also be able to use non-electrified lines and make attacks on electrical train operating equipment ineffective, diesel locomotives are essential for this purpose. DB Schenker has a special fleet of eight engines of type BR 232 for this. In addition to a mounting for installing protective grilles on the front windows, these locomotives have stronger headlights and wiring for video cameras.
