Product Features and Details
This unique railway ferry was used on the German island of RĂ¼gen, for the narrow gauge railroad there. For this country railroad, that was mainly used to transport agricultural products, it was too expensive to build a bridge. Originally powered by a steam engine when it was deployed in 1895, it was converted in 1913 to a diesel engine. The ferry narrowly missed a century of active service, running until 1993. It now is a technical monument, and is sometimes used in making movies.
